In traditional construction, building materials were chosen based on local availability — a practice known as vernacular building. In Norfolk and Suffolk, flint and brick were widely used, with flint often gathered as a byproduct of farming and combined with locally fired clay bricks.

At John Briggs & Son, we have over 20 years’ experience in the restoration of flint and brick buildings using traditional lime mortars. Our team specialises in flint rebuilding, flint knapping, brick replacement, and repointing — all carried out using breathable lime mortars suited to historic structures.
