Blending Traditional Craft with Modern Comforts
This project involved the full refurbishment of a charming 19th-century cottage, including both a sympathetic side extension and a contrasting modern rear extension—delivering the best of both worlds for the homeowner.
The side extension was carefully detailed to match the original character of the cottage, using traditional materials and design cues to ensure it blended seamlessly with the historic fabric. In contrast, the rear extension offered a contemporary addition, providing open-plan living space with modern lines and finishes, while maintaining visual separation from the original building.
Internally, the property was lime plastered throughout, preserving breathability and ensuring compatibility with the existing solid wall construction. Structural repairs were made to key areas of the original fabric to stabilise and protect the building for generations to come. A new pamment tile floor was laid, offering a timeless and locally appropriate finish.
As part of the complete refurbishment, we also installed a new heating system, kitchen, and bathrooms—bringing modern comfort and efficiency to this period property without compromising its integrity.
Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, the client was unable to complete the final stages of the project. However, the work carried out to date showcases our commitment to craftsmanship and the careful balance between tradition and modern living.
If you’re considering a refurbishment of your listed or historic home, we’re here to help you navigate both the creative vision and practical realities with care and expertise.
