Conservation Works at Barningham Winter Church – Masonry Repairs, Limework & Services Upgrade
Appointed to carry out conservation works at the historic church of Barningham Winter, our role focused on consolidating and protecting the tower as a conserved ruin, while sensitively restoring the chancel to ensure the building’s long-term use and stability.
Repairs to the structural elements of the tower and tower arch were carried out using traditional masonry techniques, with a focus on preserving original fabric wherever possible. The chancel masonry was repaired using hot-mixed quicklime, a historically appropriate method that supports the breathability and longevity of the stonework.
A complete re-roof of the chancel was undertaken to secure the structure, followed by internal lime plaster repairs and limewash decoration to stabilise and refresh the internal spaces. In parallel, we upgraded the church’s electrical supply to a 3-phase system, enabling the future installation of an efficient and appropriate heating system.
This project reflects our holistic approach to church conservation—balancing structural repair, traditional craft, and modern functionality while respecting the spiritual and historic significance of the building.
If you’re responsible for the care of a listed church or chapel, we offer specialist support to ensure works are carried out with the utmost care and in line with conservation best practice.
